A beautiful tradition of Schiermonnikoog, which is still kept alive: the islanders Pentecost festival. The festival has mainly to do with the Kallemooi Mast.
This eighteen-meter tall mast is traditionally set up between the inn and the church. A green branch is tied to the top of the mast with the Dutch flag underneath it, where the word 'Kallemooi' can be read in the white stripe. The ropes that hold the right mast are equivalent to the four winds directions. A few strong men lift the basket up before the islanders go to the local bars and restaurants to party and drink until the early hours. During the festivities there are also activities for kids, like traditional kids games and Pentecostal Riding. After the Pentecostal Riding the branch is brought down. A special festivity which will make your visit to Schiermonnikoog unforgettable.
