Westerplas - Nature
The Westerplas is the largest freshwater lake on Schiermonnikoog. It lies southwest of the village and is one of the best birdwatching spots on the island.
What can you expect at the Westerplas?
- From salt marsh to lake: Until the early 1960s this was the Westerkwelder, a salt marsh regularly flooded by the Wadden Sea. In 1964 it was cut off from the sea and the water slowly turned fresh.
- Spoonbills and cormorants: A colony of spoonbills and cormorants breeds in the trees by the lake.
- Birds all year round: You can see little egret, water rail and bluethroat, among others. In winter up to ten species of duck gather here.
- Walking and watching: A route of about 3.5 kilometres runs around the lake, with the Vogelkijkhut Westerplas bird hide and viewpoints. Most of it can also be cycled.
- Drinking water: Part of the island's drinking water is extracted at the Westerplas.
