Waterstaatpad - Observation point

The Waterstaatpad viewpoint is a dune top at the eastern end of the Waterstaatpad on Schiermonnikoog. From here you look out over the eastern part of the island, where nature is largely left to its own devices.
What can you expect at the Waterstaatpad viewpoint?
- A quiet walk: The Waterstaatpad is a wide footpath of about 4 kilometres. It starts between the dunes and gradually opens up. The further you walk, the quieter it gets.
- View over the salt marsh: South of the path lies the Oosterkwelder, the largest continuous nature area on the island.
- Songbirds: In spring you can hear whitethroat, nightingale, grasshopper warbler and icterine warbler along the path, among others.
- Wet areas: Towards the end of the path it gets wetter, with reeds and pools. Here you may spot water rail, spoonbill or bluethroat.
Practical information
- Access: The path is for walkers only. You can park bikes at beach pavilion De Marlijn.
- Return: Walk back the same way, or continue to the sea and return along the beach.
- Breeding season: The path is open all year, but the Oosterkwelder is closed from 15 April to 15 July.
- Combine with: A visit to the Kobbeduinen.
The Waterstaatpad viewpoint is a lovely goal for a quiet walk into the wild east of Schiermonnikoog.
