Vogelkijkscherm Westerplas - Observation point

The Westerplas bird screen stands in the north-west corner of the Westerplas on Schiermonnikoog. Natuurmonumenten put up the screen so that you can watch the spoonbill colony well without disturbing it. It is a different spot from the Westerplas bird hide.
What can you expect at the Westerplas bird screen?
- History: In the winter of 2022 to 2023, much willow scrub was cut back or removed to restore the view of the lake. A small hill was also cleared as a lookout.
- Birds: From the screen you see the spoonbills up close. On and around the lake live almost all Dutch duck species, great crested grebes and coots, and in the reeds even the bittern.
- Tip: Bring binoculars and combine your visit with the bird hide and the Bank van Banck on the dike.
