Silverwind - Boat Trip
On the Silverwind you sail from the ferry jetty of Schiermonnikoog between the sandbanks to the seals. Then you set foot on the Engelsmanplaat, a sandbank in the middle of the Wadden Sea. The trip is organised by Wadloopcentrum Pieterburen together with the VVV.
What can you expect at a trip on the Silverwind?
- Seals: Just before low tide the boat heads to the seal banks, where common and grey seals rest on the emerging sand.
- On the sandbank: After about an hour's sailing you go ashore and explore the Engelsmanplaat with a guide. To get there you wade a short way through the water, sometimes hip deep.
- On board: There is a toilet, and drinks and snacks are available.
- Evening trip: Sometimes the Silverwind also sails in the evening, with seals in the evening light and a walk on the mudflats in the dark.
Practical information
- Departure: The boat leaves from and returns to the ferry jetty on the Veerweg. Departure depends on the tide. Arrive ten minutes early, as the boat leaves on time.
- Duration: The whole trip takes three to three and a half hours.
- What to bring: Bring a towel, dry clothes, a jumper and water shoes, or go barefoot. Binoculars can be rented at Het Baken.
- Booking: Book online via Natuurmonumenten. The trip runs with at least thirty participants and in suitable weather. Because of the steps on the quay it is not suitable for wheelchair users.
A trip on the Silverwind combines seal watching with a walk on a sandbank that disappears again at high tide.
Furthermore Silverwind is near the following sights: Banckspolder (±950 m), Duck decoy De Kooiplaats (±1,1 km), Stables Florida (±1,6 km), Cemetery Vredenhof (±1,6 km) & Wasserman Bunker (±1,9 km).
