Schiermonnikoog Monastery - Church

Monks once again live on the island named after them. At Schiermonnikoog Monastery on the Knuppeldam, a small community of Trappists lives in simplicity and prayer. They came from the abbey of Sion near Diepenveen and have lived on Schiermonnikoog since 2019.
What can you expect at Schiermonnikoog Monastery?
History: In the Middle Ages the island belonged to the Cistercian abbey of Klaarkamp. The story of those grey monks lives on in the island's name and in the monk statue in the village.
- The building: The monastery is housed in Rijsbergen, a manor house from 1757 that later served as a youth hostel and hotel. After renovation, the monastery was blessed on 28 February 2021.
- Trappists: The community belongs to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance and is led by abbot Brother Alberic. The monks live from the guesthouse, icon painting and candle making.
