- Historical Background: In the Middle Ages, Schiermonnikoog was an outpost of the Cistercian monastery Claercamp in Rinsumageest near Dokkum. The monks of this monastery played a crucial role in reclaiming the land.
- The Statue: In memory of these monks, a statue of a monk, "The Solitary Monk," was erected in the village in 1961. This artwork was created by Martin van Waning, a recognized artist.
- Name Meaning: The name Schiermonnikoog is derived from the gray robes ('schier') worn by the monks. 'Oog' is etymologically related to 'ei,' which means island.
