Lighthouse Noordertoren Schiermonnikoog

The impressive red Noordertoren is the symbol of Schiermonnikoog and an unmissable landmark on this Wadden Island.
What makes the Noordertoren so special?
- A piece of maritime history: The tower was built in 1853–1854 and has since safeguarded shipping around Schiermonnikoog. Together with the white Zuidertoren, it once formed a light line guiding ships safely past the sandbanks.
- Functional and photogenic: Since 1998, the tower has had its characteristic red colour. This makes it highly visible to sailors and much loved by photographers – especially at sunset.
- Height and architecture: The Noordertoren is 36 metres tall and built of brick. At the top is the powerful light that still shines its fixed pattern every night over the Wadden Sea and North Sea.
- Still in service: Although the Zuidertoren is no longer in use, the Noordertoren remains operational 24 hours a day. Weather reports and notices for the coastal waters are issued from here, and shipping is monitored.
- Unique additions over time:
- In 1910 the tower was fitted with a rotating light and the Zuidertoren became redundant.
- In 1951 a lookout post for the coastguard was added.
- In 1979 the tower received a new lantern house with radar antenna. Surroundings and views: The dunes around the tower are ideal for walking or cycling. From here you have stunning views over beach, sea and nature.
