Lighthouse Zuidertoren Schiermonnikoog

The white South Tower is one of the iconic landmarks of Schiermonnikoog and tells a remarkable story from the island’s maritime history.
Why a visit to the South Tower is so special
- Unique lighthouse duo: On Schiermonnikoog there are both a white and a red tower, both built in 1854. You won’t find that on any other Wadden island.
- Originally a leading light: The South Tower worked together with the North Tower. Ships could safely navigate the shallows when the lights of both towers aligned perfectly.
- Out of use since 1910: When the red North Tower received a rotating mechanical light, the white tower lost its role as a beacon.
- New functions over time:
- In 1950 the tower was converted into a drinking water reservoir.
- In 1992 KPN took ownership and used it as a transmission mast.
- Since 2018 it has been owned by a local foundation, which restored the tower and plans to open a small museum. - Historic surroundings: Next to the South Tower you can still see the former keeper’s house Duinoord (1854) and the old oil shed from 1872, together giving a fine impression of life around the tower.
- Photogenic spot: With its robust white appearance and dune setting, the tower is a favourite subject for photographers and a popular stop during hikes and cycling tours.
