Whale Jaw - Sight
The Walviskaken in the centre of Schiermonnikoog are one of the island’s notable sights. The enormous lower jaw of a blue whale stands at Willemshof and recalls the important role that Schiermonnikoog played in the history of Dutch whaling.
What can you expect at the Walviskaken?
- Impressive size: Admire the enormous lower jaw of a blue whale, the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth.
- Fascinating history: The jaw is a reminder of Dutch whaling, which involved many people from Schiermonnikoog in the years following the Second World War.
- The Willem Barendsz: Between 1946 and 1964, the factory ship Willem Barendsz made eighteen voyages to the waters around Antarctica, accompanied by several catcher boats.
- Jaw from 1950: The whale from which the jaw came was caught in the Southern Ocean on 6 March 1950.
- Klaas Visser: Captain and expedition leader Klaas Visser, who was from Schiermonnikoog, brought the jaw back to the island and donated it to the local community.
- Since 1951: The Whale Jaw has stood in the village centre since 1951, making it a recognisable piece of the island’s history.
- Whaling after the war: Dutch whaling resumed partly because of the post-war shortage of oils and fats. Whale products were used for various purposes, including oil, margarine and animal feed.
- Many islanders on board: For several people from Schiermonnikoog, whaling was an important source of income in the post-war years.
