Oosterduinen - Nature
The Oosterduinen are part of the large dune area of Schiermonnikoog, east of the village. A varied landscape of dune tops, open grassland and wet dune valleys.
What can you expect at the Oosterduinen?
- Wet dune valleys: The southern part has lime-rich, damp dune valleys.
- Special plants: Orchids grow in the island's dune valleys, turning them pink in spring. In late summer grass-of-Parnassus flowers.
- Breeding birds: Eider, wheatear, hen harrier and marsh harrier breed in the dunes of Schiermonnikoog, among others.
- Keeping it open: With fewer rabbits, the dunes become overgrown more quickly. Mowing, sod cutting and grazing keep the landscape open.
- Protected nature: The dunes are part of the Natura 2000 area and the National Park.
Practical information
- Out and about: Walk or cycle along the paths through the dunes. During the breeding season, from 15 April to 15 July, stay on the paths.
